Soviet Union: The NEP and the defeat of the Left

The last phase of Lenin’s life—first partial, then total disablement, then death—had fortuitously provided a sort of transitional period...

The policy of War Communism, in effect since 1918, had by 1921 brought the national economy to the point of total breakdown. The Kronshtadt Rebellion of March 1921 convinced the Communist Party and its leader, Vladimir Lenin, of the need to retreat from socialist policies in order to maintain the party’s hold on power. Accordingly, the 10th Party Congress in March 1921 introduced the measures of the New Economic Policy. These measures included the return of most agriculture, retail trade, and small-scale light industry to private ownership and management while the state retained control of heavy industry, transport, banking, and foreign trade. Money was reintroduced into the economy in 1922 (it had been abolished under War Communism). The peasantry were allowed to own and cultivate their own land, while paying taxes to the state. The New Economic Policy reintroduced a measure of stability to the economy and allowed the Soviet people to recover from years of war, civil war, and governmental mismanagement. The small businessmen and managers who flourished in this period became known as NEP men.

But the NEP was viewed by the Soviet government as merely a temporary expedient to allow the economy to recover while the Communists solidified their hold on power. By 1925 Nikolay Bukharin had become the foremost supporter of the NEP, while Leon Trotsky was opposed to it and Joseph Stalin was noncommittal. The NEP was dogged by the government’s chronic inability to procure enough grain supplies from the peasantry to feed its urban work force. In 1928–29 these grain shortages prompted Joseph Stalin, by then the country’s paramount leader, to forcibly eliminate the private ownership of farmland and to collectivize agriculture under the state’s control, thus ensuring the procurement of adequate food supplies for the cities in the future. This abrupt policy change, which was accompanied by the destruction of several million of the country’s most prosperous private farmers, marked the end of the NEP. It was followed by the reimposition of state control over all industry and commerce in the country by 1931

One major role African Americans played in the Union victory in the Civil War is that they acted as spies in Confederate territory. The correct option is c.

During the American Civil War, tactical or battlefield information became crucial to both sides on the battlefield. Scout and spy units provided information on troop movements and strengths directly to the commanders of armies in the field. The difference between spies and scouts may be the difference between life and death: if a suspect was apprehended while wearing a disguise and not his army uniform, he was frequently given the death penalty.

On June 26 and 27, 1863, the 35th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, went through Gettysburg, but a spy by the name of Will Talbot was left behind.

According to the following introduction of President Ronald Reagan's speech honoring the memory of the seven astronauts killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, why was “Shuttle Mission 51-L” considered to be historic and different from other space flights? Officially, it was "Shuttle Mission 51-L," but every American knew it as "the flight with the teacher" because one of the crew members was a thirty-seven-year-old teacher named Christa McAuliffe. The first civilian to venture into space, McAuliffe had been chosen out of 11,000 volunteers to join six astronauts on the space shuttle Challenger. Promising "the ultimate field trip," NASA1 heavily promoted the launch, and tens of millions of Americans—many of them schoolchildren—tuned in to witness the historic event live on January 28, 1986. At 11:39 A.M., cheers erupted at Cape Canaveral and at McAuliffe's school back in Concord, New Hampshire, as the Challenger soared skyward into a picture-perfect, cloudless sky. And then suddenly, inconceivably, the shuttle disappeared into a massive fireball as the two booster rockets sailed on, leaving behind a billowy pitchfork of smoke. Shock immediately turned to grief as the realization sank in: The shuttle had exploded, killing everyone on board. President Reagan was scheduled to give the State of the Union address before Congress that evening, but instead focused solely on the seven crew members who lost their lives—the first American astronauts ever to die in flight.

Which computer technology do you use for mentioned areas of application

Answers

Answer:

Advances in computer-based information technology in recent years have led to a wide variety of systems that managers are now using to make and implement decisions. By and large, these systems have been developed from scratch for specific purposes and differ significantly from standard electronic data processing systems. Too often, unfortunately, managers have little say in the development of these decision support sysems; at the same time, non-managers who do develop them have a limited view of how they can be used. In spite of these drawbacks, the author found that a number of the 56 systems he studied are successful. And the difference between success and failure is the extent to which managers can use the system to increase their effectiveness within their organizations. Thus, the author suggests that this is the criterion designers and managers should jointly ascribe to in exploiting the capabilities of today’s technologies.

- the compromise of 1850

- the Kansas- Nebraska Act

What was the fundamental question addressed in each of these congressional acts?

Answers

The Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise is a legislation that was passed in 1820. This established that Maine was to be admitted to the United States as a free state, while Missouri was to be admitted as a slave state. The passage of the act was significant as it legally established the idea of a balance of power between the North and the South.

The Compromise of 1850

The Compromise of 1850 mainly dealt with the question of whether the territories acquired in the Mexican-American War were to be considered slave or free states. The Compromise also contributed to setting Texas's borders and dealing with fugitive slaves and the slave trade.

The Kansas- Nebraska Act

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a piece of legislation passed in 1854 which allowed people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether they would like to allow slavery within their territory. This was effectively a repeal of the Missouri Compromise of 1820. It led to conflict between the pro-slavery and the anti-slavery sectors of the population.
