How did delegates to the Constitutional Convention account for the practice of slavery when calculating representation in Congress?

Answers

At the Constitutional Convention, delegates from the Southern States wanted slaves to be counted in the census because they had a much higher slace population than the Northern States. So, Southern States wanted slaves to be counted in representation so there states would have more representatives. Northern states did not want this because they did not have nearly as many slaves as states in the South. So, if slaves were to have been included in the census, the South would have more representatives the North. The North also argued that slaves were not citizens of the US, therefore they should not be counted. Because of the dispute, the 3/5ths compromise was established at the Constitutional Convention. This compromise between the states decided that slaves would be calculated into the population for representation by adding up all of the slaves in a given state and then multiplying that number by the fraction 3/5. This compromise gave Southern States more representation than if slaves weren’t to be counted but it did not allow southern states to be overrpresented in the House of Representatives in comparison to the Northern States. Hope this helps!

How is "...paying taxes without appeal when laws do not suit us" similar to the American Revolutionary war cry "no taxation without representation"?

Answers

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

How is "...paying taxes without appeal when laws do not suit us" similar to the American Revolutionary war cry "no taxation without representation"?

Answer: It is similar in that the petitioners of universal suffrage questioned why they had to pay taxes when they did not have any rights.

It is very similar to the case of the American colonies' time when colonists were angry against the English crown due to the many taxes imposed by the King of England such as the Tea Act, the Stamp Act, or the Navigation Acts. The English government forced Americans to pay taxes, but they protested saying that they had no voice or representation in the British Parliament.

"A Petition for a Universal Sufragge" was the document presented to the US Congress on January 29, 1866. The document was drafted by Elizabeth C. Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

"Paying taxes without appeal..." is similar to American Revolutionary war cry "no taxation without representation" because both are demanding for the right of Representation, without legal representation they questioned why should they give taxes.

No taxation without Representation:

During the British colonialist rule Americans were forced with Taxes and Acts which have only one objective that is to exploit them, such as Tea Act, the Stamp Act, or the Navigation Acts, they protested saying that they had no voice or representation in the British Parliament, than how come they could accept these taxes or acts.

During Women Suffrage the same demand arised as women were prohibited to vote, therefore "...paying taxes without appeal when laws do not suit us"  is similar to the American Revolutionary war cry "no taxation without representation".

As in both cases the petitioners questioned why they had to pay taxes when they did not have any rights.

B

C

They were a source of labor for factories in Britain.

D

They produced a market for raw materials from Britain.

E

They were a source of raw materials for British industries.

Answers

Answer:

B and D

Explanation:

To answer the question properly, we need to understand what mercantilism is.

Mercantilism simply refers to a term in which a country works to ensure that the amount of imports is in the minimum while the amount of exports the company has is maximized.

It is one of the systems which was used by the Imperial British government to control its colonies.

Basically what the government does is to ensure that there is a market for its product in its colonies while otherwise these colonies are also a source of raw materials for the industries producing goods in the Imperial British empire.

So what these colonies do are put simple. They take in some of the exports and also provide the system with raw materials so as to maximize the exports coming out on the long run.
