In the 1960s, the surf culture was not just a day at the beach, it was a way of life. The Beach Boys were an influential surf rock band, filled with guitars and harmonies. Their leader, Brian Wilson, rose up as one of the most significant, original musicians and composers of 20th-century popular music. In the early 1960s, Brian formed the band the Beach Boys with his brothers Dennis and Carl, his cousin Mike Love, and their school friend, Al Jardine. He wrote many of the band's songs, launching the group into stardom and celebrating the surf culture's fascination with fun in the sun. He was responsible for such hit songs as “Help Me, Rhonda” and “Surfin' USA.” Even though he became deaf in one ear, he continued to arrange and compose most of the Beach Boys' songs, which were flooded with harmonies and interesting chord progressions that weren't normally heard in pop music.
