Read the excerpt from a summary of “The World on Turtle’s Back.” [1] The twins had opposite natures: the right-handed twin was truthful, and the left-handed twin was deceitful. [2] The right-handed twin always did the right thing, and the left-handed twin always did everything backward. [3] In these ways, the brothers represented the two warring natures that are in all people. [4] Quarreling constantly, they used magical powers to create animals that fought one another, and to create plants and medicines that could be used for good or for evil.

Which best describes sentence 2?

A. It is a run-on sentence.

B. It is a simple sentence.

C. It is a compound-complex sentence.

D. It is a compound sentence.

Answer:

The option that best describes sentence 2 is:

D. It is a compound sentence.

Explanation:

An independent clause is a group of words that has a subject and a predicate and that is able to express a complete thought on its own.

When we join two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction, we have a compound sentence. Coordinating conjunctions are the following: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

That is what we have in sentence 2, "The right-handed twin always did the right thing, and the left-handed twin always did everything backward." The coordinating conjunction "and" is connecting the two independent clauses. If we separate them, we can see they are independent because they can each express a full thought:

- The right-handed twin always did the right thing.

- And the left-handed twin always did everything backward.

Note: We would have a run-on sentence if sentence 2 did not have a comma before the conjunction.

Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes. In the human body, the parasites multiply in the liver, and then infect red blood cells. Symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, and vomiting, and usually appear between 10 and 15 days after the mosquito bite. If not treated, malaria can quickly become life-threatening by disrupting the blood supply to vital organs. In many parts of the world, the parasites have developed resistance to a number of malaria medicines. Key interventions to control malaria include: prompt and effective treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapies; use of insecticidal nets by people at risk; and indoor residual spraying with insecticide to control the vector mosquitoes. Choosing the right dog to adopt is a big responsibility that takes some thought and planning. To begin with, there are hundreds of breeds of dogs available to pet owners. They all have the potential to be great pets, but not every breed is right for every person. For example, Veterinarian's Weekly categorizes a Jack Russell terrier as a high- energy breed. My aunt has one, and that thing is crazy! It needs walks like 24/7. Therefore, it would be best suited to a very active family that has a large yard and a walkable neighborhood. In addition to energy level, pet owners should consider the size of their dog. How could this excerpt from an essay best be revised to clarify meaning and enhance style? O A. It had been a tiring day at Camp Kikiwaka. The campers were quite exhausted after an exhilarating day of riding, canoeing, and various activities. Three friends, Lily, Asher, and Jack, had decided to spend the remaining hours of the day conversing, sitting with their legs dangled in the gleaming stream. Lily looks up at the sunset sky, noticing its blue but slightly orange color. She planned to comment on this with the boys and tried in vain to get their attention. Instead of listening to her, they engaged in a conversation about funny videos and trending topics.

After several failed attempts to join in the conversation, Lily focused on the calm stream's waters. As she looked, she spotted a log gradually coming closer to her sight of view. As she stood up to get a better look, she discovered that it was not a log. Instead, it was a bloodthirsty alligator darting towards her. She tried to get the boys' attention, to warn them. Despite her efforts, again, they seemed very engrossed in their conversation to pay any heed. Before she could utter a word more, the alligator shot up, pouncing on her leg, and attempting to drag her into the deep waters below.

Jack tried to hold on to her hand and pull her up, but it was no use; the alligator was too strong for him. Asher ran to the campgrounds, desperately looking for a camp counselor to help. Eventually, he found Mrs. Johnson, the chief camp counselor, and was able to rush back to the scene. She met Lily struggling and kicking the alligator's head in desperation. Mrs. Johnson instructed Lily to poke the alligator's eyes, afterward, hit his snout. Lily did so, and after continuous repetition, the alligator retreated into the stream.

Her leg was injured but, she was ever grateful that she had survived this attack. Mrs. Johnson called for an ambulance, and Lily was carried to the hospital to get her leg treated. The remaining weeks were a moment of regret/guilt for Jake and Asher as they blamed themselves for the happenings. If only they had listened to Lily and left the stream, all would have been well.
