Read the excerpt from On the Road
One day I was hanging around the campus and Chad and Tim Gray told me Dean was staying in a cold-water pad in
East Harlem, the Spanish Harlem. Dean had arrived the night before, the first time in New York, with his beautiful little
sharp chick Marylou; they got off the Greyhound bus at 50th Street and cut around the corner looking for a place to eat
and went right in Hector's, and since then Hector's cafeteria has always been a big symbol of New York for Dean.
What does this excerpt reveal about the beat generation?
The beat generation was made up of middle-class youth who were seeking work after graduating college.
The beat generation was made up of young people who were just beginning their lives as independent adults.
The beat generation was made up of middle-aged people who had become disillusioned with life.
The beat generation was made up of privileged youth who had begun attending high-profile social events.

Answers

Answer:

The beat generation was made up of young people who were just beginning their lives as independent adults.

Explanation:

American writer Jack Kerouac's novel On The Road is a story based on the writer's own travels across America with his friends. Through the characters of Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty, the story shows a new form/class of generation eager for adventure and carefree attitude.

In the given excerpt from the novel, the narrator Sal mentions how his friend Dean first began his life with his new wife Marylou. This detail about how life began for Dean and the others show how the beat generation were young people who had just started beginning their lives as adults independent from their parents and others.

Thus, the correct answer is the second option.

Answer:

The beat generation was made up of young people who were just beginning their lives as independent adults.

Questions are from “Omer’s Big Dive”
By Lucinda H. Kennaley 2017

1. Explain what Nasser means when he talks about “fire” in paragraph 11.

2. Omer thinks about the reasons he is scared to dive before he dives for the first time. Is Omer brave for going on the dive even though he was scared? Why or why not?

3. At the end of the story, Omer declares, “I’m a pearl diver.” How does Omer come to decide this about himself?

Answers

Answer:

In paragraph 11 Nasser tells Omer to "Pull your rope before your chest catches fire", what Nasser is means that when Omer goes underwater he should signal to be pulled to the surface by pulling his rope, before his lungs starts to hurt from the effort of holding his breath.Yes Omer is brave for going on the dive even though he was scared. This is because his fears are all very real, he could actually get stung by a jellyfish and his saib could fail to detect it when Omer pulls the rope. Omer also knows all the consequences of diving, like going bald and losing his hearing, yet he decides to dive because he knows his responsibilities should be bigger than his fears. Therefore, Omer is brave for going on the dive.Omer goes on the dive, he experienced all the feelings first time divers get, he filled his basket before getting pulled to the surface. Omer actually enjoyed his experience and wants to follow in his father's footsteps, he is proud of his achievement and doesn't want to be a mere errand boy so Omer declares "I'm a pearl diver." at the end.

Explanation:

In the short story "Omer's Big Dive" a young boy Omer decides to become a peal diver to get money to pay his father's debts.

He was scared to dive for the first time but eventually does it because he knows he has responsibilities now, since his father is dead.

Nasser, an old diver and his father's friends tells him what to expect and what to do on his first dive.

Omer goes on the dive and likes the experience, he prepares to return for the second dive and declares "I'm a pearl diver now."

The Fox and the Monkey
by Aesop
A Fox and a Monkey were on the road together, and fell into a dispute as to which of the two was the better born. They kept it up for some time,
till they came to a place where the road passed through a cemetery full of monuments, when the Monkey stopped and looked about him and
gave a great sigh. "Why do you sigh?" said the Fox. The Monkey pointed to the tombs and replied, "All the monuments that you see here were
put up in honour of my forefathers, who in their day were eminent men." The Fox was speechless for a moment, but quickly recovering he said,

Answers

Answer:

An attractive aspect of using word processing programs is the variety of fonts and colors they provide. Achieving the same results by hand is nearly impossible. Markers and inks tend to be messy if one does not know how to use them properly. Furthermore, different fonts would require knowledge of calligraphy or the use of molds. Technology offers the convenience that handwriting lacks. As a result, more people are choosing to use computers instead of writing by hand.

Explanation:

The first error is the verb that is missing to indicate the qualities of word processing programs. The second error is that the word font should be in plural because we are referring to the range of fonts as same as the colors that the programs offer. The third error is the word -it-, this "it" is referring to processing programs, as they are plural, the subject should be they and as the subject has changed, the verb has changed too, now is conjugated differently. The fifth error is the capital letter in the word ink, this word is not a proper noun or is not at the beginning of a sentence, so it should be inks, not Inks. The sixth error is the word now, the word that should be there according to the context and structure is -how-. The next mistake is the word they, the personal pronoun here should be them because we are referring to an object, not a subject. The last mistake is that after -as a result- there should be a comma instead of a semicolon since we use semicolons to connect two sentences. In this case, there are not two sentences, so we have to use a comma to make a pause and to introduce the next part of the sentence.

Answer:

A. Hume describes this type of people as either eloquent or ridiculous.

Explanation:

According to a different source, this question refers to the text "Of the Dignity or Meanness of Human Nature" by David Hume.

In this text, Hume presents two relatively contradictory ideas. On the one hand, Hume argues that some people believe men to be naturally wonderful and remarkable. They believe that men are demigods, and that their purpose on Earth is a wonderful one. On the other hand, other people believe that men are naturally mean, and they tend to focus on men's flaws. Of the second group, Hume states that these people are often either eloquent and talented for irony, or ridiculous. Hume tends to favour the first group.

The type of people tend to focus on the meaness of man are:

A. Hume describes this type of people as either eloquent or ridiculous.

As indicated by an alternate source, this inquiry alludes to the text "Of the Dignity or Meanness of Human Nature" by David Hume.

In this message, Hume presents two somewhat inconsistent thoughts. From one viewpoint, Hume contends that certain individuals accept men to be normally brilliant and wonderful.

They accept that men are mythical beings, and that their motivation on Earth is a superb one. Then again, others accept that men are normally mean, and they will generally zero in on men's blemishes.

The subsequent gathering, Hume expresses that these individuals are frequently either smooth and capable for incongruity, or strange.

Hume will in general incline toward the principal bunch.

3) How has Katniss been adopted by political parties in the United States?

AJennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games: Catching Fire

All hail Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games trilogy. If you are the mother of a pre-teen girl, you will know the whispered relief around these films. "About time. Go!" If you would like your teenage daughter to see something other than the underclass sobbing on a crass talent show, orange twentysomethings Botoxing themselves, or girls who are just "naturally thin" and who giggle when their clothes just drop off, then you will already know about them. If, like me, you simply would like to see a young woman not defined by her relationship to men, crack open the pick 'n' mix.

Clearly I am not alone. Nor is my youngest. Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games, has had the fourth biggest box office weekend opening in history. Ever since the first film came out, my daughter read the books by Suzanne Collins and we have a shrine to Peeta, Katniss's fellow contestant.

The books are neither warm nor easy, but then dystopian futures of totalitarian states (Panem, as it is called) only work when they're not so far from the imagination. In The Hunger Games, the rich and powerful control the Capitol and dress in grotesque Gaga-ish costumes while the poor live out in the Districts and are treated with increasing contempt.

This is a police state where "peacekeepers" kill and torture. Hegemony is maintained by giving them very little – that's why Katniss learned to hunt illegally – but staging huge spectacles: each District is "reaped" to find two people who are chosen for the televised Hunger Games.

So this is a satire on the kind of TV that its target audience watches. The games are a brutal contest to kill every other contestant. It is the logical conclusion of reality TV: survival of the fittest. At the centre of this is Katniss, played by the sparky Jennifer Lawrence, who is seen on red carpets in apparently awful outfits. What do I know? Every time I read these gown-downs, as I call them, I like the ones the fashionistas hate (Bjork wearing a swan being my all-time favourite). We have seen Lawrence being chatted up on camera by sleazoid Jack Nicholson, who, to be fair, is only three times her age. And we have seen her lose it in front of the paparazzi, screaming: "Stop. Stop. Stop." So she isn't just acting cool, she is cool and aware that she wants to keep her body healthy-looking, not a size zero.

The obligation to be a role model is daunting and modern. I can't remember wanting to be anyone other than Mr Spock and David Bowie. The female bit is blank – my memory is only full of girls I did not want to be or never imagined I could be.

Since then, we pretty much have a roll-call of politically correct heroines, but still have to go some way back to find tough, independent women, from Linda Hamilton in Terminator to Sigourney Weaver in Alien, or Tarantino's fantasy of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Japanese cinema has produced some magnificent female characters, and, of course, we rewrite the "final girl" of the horror genre: in which, after several women have been raped/killed/tortured, the final girl turns the table and survives.

Lately though, for teenage girls, we have had Twilight's mopey and passive Bella Swan. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is long gone, so to see Katniss (more akin to Neo in The Matrix) as resilient and smart and reluctantly becoming a symbol of a revolution is quite something. Guys fall in love with her but she really has better things to do: the uprising. Unlike Russell Brand's fluffier talk of revolution, the movies do not shy away from the violence and executions that accompany the suppression of dissent, with the great Donald Sutherland's watery eyes conveying pure evil as the president.

Sure, Katniss is an idealised fantasy anti-authoriatarian heroine. She is also confused, stubborn and vulnerable. What she isn't is either "girly" or interested in riches. She makes her bow and arrows to bring down the system. Nothing is said about gender. She is taller than one of her partners and it's her physical and mental prowess that we root for.

Answer:

C

The mind and body at odds theme best describe The Metamorphosis by Franz . Thus, option C is correct.

What is Metamorphosis?

Franz wrote a novella titled Metamorphosis, which would have been initially released in 1915. Metamorphosis, one of his greatest works, is the tale of merchant Gregor Samsa, who awakens awake in the morning to discover that he has been mysteriously turned into a giant beetle and then must battle to adapt to this new state.

In essence, he still has a human mind, but rather because his form is no longer human, he initially finds it difficult to bring these two aspects of himself together. Gregor's intellect starts to adjust to his bodily demands and desires as he grows adapted to his physical entity.

Therefore, option C is the correct option.
