देश की प्रगति को नुक्सान पहुंचने के लिए गन्दगी, कूड़ा करकट प्रमुख रूप से जिम्मेदार है। जिसके कारण ज़्यादातर प्रयटक देश में आने से कतराते है। यह एक गंभीर समस्या है जिसका समाधान करना अनिवार्य है।
आज गाँव में शौचालय बनाने पर ज़ोर दिया है। कई गांवों में शौचालय बनाया गया है। गवर्नमेंट ने कई ऐसे मुहीम चलाये है जहाँ गांव में शौचालय बनाने की जागरूकता फैलाई जाए। खुले में सोच करने से कई बीमारिआं हो सकती है। इसके लिए कई नदियाँ भी प्रदूषित हो रही है। गांव में अभी भी कुछ लोग सरकार के निर्देशों का उल्लंघन करते हुए हर दिन नज़र आते है। अगर आपके आस पड़ोस, राज्य और देश में सफाई होगी तभी हमारा समाज सुखी रहेगा और रोगमुक्त भी अवश्य रहेगा। बड़े और विशाल शहरों में शौचालय तो है लेकिन ज़्यादातर हमेशा साफ़ -सुथरे नहीं रहते है। यह हमारे समाज की विडंबना है कि वह सब कुछ जानने के पश्चात भी सफाई बनाने में असमर्थ पाए जाते है।
देश को स्वच्छ रखने के लिए देश ने स्वच्छ अभियान की मुहीम शुरू करने का निर्णय किया। स्वच्छ भारत अभियान 1999 से चल रहा है और इसके पूर्व इसका नामांकन ग्रामीण स्वछता अभियान के अनुसार रखा गया था। परन्तु प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने इस परियोजना में कुछ परिवर्तन करके इस योजना का नाम निर्मल भारत अभियान रख दिया था। स्वच्छ भारत अभियान को 2014 सितम्बर को केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल से इसको स्वीकृति दी गयी थी। स्वच्छ भारत अभियान का उद्घाटन प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्रमोदी द्वारा गाँधी जयंती के दिन 2014 को किया गया था।
महात्मा गाँधी जो हमारे देश के राष्ट्र पिता है उनका सपना था कि हमारा देश स्वस्थ रहे और स्वस्थ रहने के लिए साफ़ सफाई सबसे एहम होती है। नरेन्द्रमोदी ने इसलिए इस बात को ध्यान में रखते हुए इस सफाई अभियान का उद्घाटन गाँधी जयंती के सुबह अवसर पर किया था। साफ़ सफाई से संबंधित यह सबसे बड़ा मुहीम है। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने इस अभियान का सुभारम्भ दिल्ली के राजघाट से कि थी।
नरेंद्र मोदी जी ने दिल्ली के बाल्मीकि बस्ती में सड़को पर झाडू लगाया था ताकि लोगों में स्वछता के महत्व पर जागरूकता फैले। इस अभियान का लक्ष्य है सम्पूर्ण देश से गन्दगी को हटाना लेकिन इसके लिए सिर्फ सरकार अकेले काम नहीं कर सकती है। हम सबको मिलकर इस अभियान में शामिल होने कि ज़रूरत है।
