Today was the big adoption event at the dog shelter where Tim and I worked.
The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as we prepared for potential adopters to arrive. Tim, however, seemed to be struggling to stay awake, yawning constantly as he went about his tasks.
As I observed Tim's incessant yawning, I couldn't help but feel the contagious effect it had on me. Each time Tim yawned, I found myself doing the same, making it difficult for me to focus on the tasks at hand.
This contagious yawning phenomenon was an interesting aspect I had learned about in a passage called "What is it about Yawning?"
I noticed that not only was I affected by Tim's yawning, but the dogs at the shelter seemed to pick up on it as well. As Tim moved from kennel to kennel, I saw the dogs imitate his yawns, which only added to the chain reaction.
This yawning, which might have been perceived as a sign of boredom or disinterest, was unintentionally casting a sleepy atmosphere over the adoption event.
Determined to break the cycle, I decided to address the situation with Tim. "Hey Tim, I noticed you're yawning a lot. Is everything okay? Do you need a quick break before the event starts?" I asked with genuine concern.
Tim sheepishly responded, "Oh, I didn't realize it was that noticeable. I just didn't sleep well last night. I'll try to stop."
Acknowledging the contagious effect of yawning and the importance of maintaining a positive and energetic atmosphere, Tim made a conscious effort to suppress his yawns.
Together, we focused on making the adoption event a success, engaging with the dogs and potential adopters with enthusiasm and energy. Our concerted effort paid off, as numerous dogs found their forever homes that day, and the yawning was quickly forgotten.
