Granted, her sole claim to fame is that she was George Washington's mother, and the connection was known to be tense at times. Mary Ball Washington, on the other hand, was widowed at the age of thirty-five and left with five children to raise. When George's father died when he was eleven years old, he let his mother's expectations to mold his character. Mrs. Washington was a strong-willed woman who commanded her household with sternness and common reason, instilling in her son the values of honor and integrity. This style of thinking shaped her son's personality, allowing him to lead by example.

Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a male and joined the Patriot army, became a hero of the American Revolution. She was the only woman to get a full military pension for her service in the Revolutionary army.

[3] But when the sun was getting low and everything seemed most bewildering and discouraging, I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream, growing not in the ground but on a bed of yellow mosses in which its small white bulb had found a soft nest and from which its one leaf and one flower sprung. The flower was white and made the impression of the utmost simple purity like a snowflower. No other bloom was near it, for the bog a short distance below the surface was still frozen, and the water was ice cold. It seemed the most spiritual of all the flower people I had ever met.
